Media Application Server reliable network configuration

Ad Hoc Audio Conferencing network considerations
For successfully deploying the Ad Hoc Audio conferencing service on Media
Application Servers in an IP network, Nortel strongly recommends the use
of Differentiated Services (DiffServ) in VoIP networks. Both Ad Hoc and
Meet Me conferences need DiffServ markings. Simply configuring the MAS
for DiffServ will handle whatever applications are on the server. The MAS
installer configures DiffServ. For a more detailed discussion about these
subjects, see
"Quality of service (QoS)" (page 117)
.
Meet Me Audio Conferencing network considerations
Meet Me Audio conferences are typically used by participants at the top or
bottom of the hour. For example, most conferences start at 9:00 a.m. or
9:30 a.m. This means that at these times, there are spikes in calls to the
Meet Me conferencing service. This results in a spike of INVITE and REFER
messages to the Session Manager and MAS. Furthermore, depending on
the user community, subscribers can leave one bridge at the end of the hour
or half hour to join another. This results in spikes in BYE messages that
must be processed.
The network planner must consider these spikes when determining capacity
on the Session Manager, Database module, and MAS servers. For more
detailed discussion about capacities, see
"Capacities" (page 111)
If the instant message (IM) notification is enabled, it creates additional
instant messaging traffic that must also be considered. IMs are sent to the
chairperson only. The chairperson receives an IM when a participant joins
the bridge and is in a holding pattern, joins the bridge after a chairperson
activates the bridge, or leaves the bridge.
IM Chat network considerations
IM traffic from the MAS IM Chat server can have peak moments. IM traffic
from the server can be more significant than IM traffic sent to the server.
In IP networks where clients are behind a Network Address Translation
device or firewall, the MCS clients send routine SIP PING messages to
keep the pinholes open.
