The Gen 3 CU has the capability of interfacing and operating with North America Traf
fi
c’s previous
generations of traf
fi
c signal controllers, known as Gen 1 and Gen 2.
If operating Gen 3 with previous generations of control units (CU), a few rules apply:
• Only one generation of CU can be operated with the Gen 3 system at any given time (i.e. Gen 3 with
Gen 1, or Gen 3 with Gen 2). Operating Gen 1 and Gen 2 together is not possible.
• A Gen 3 CU
must
always be the PRIMARY unit within the network.
• The Gen 3 unit can only operate in BASIC mode when operating with Gen 1 or Gen 2 units.
Be aware that not all Gen 3 functions are available when operating in compatibility mode. Differences and
limitations of compatibility mode are outlined below:
