Using Phantom loran to determine position
What is Phantom
loran?
The Phantom loran feature is designed for those users who’ve
previously compiled lists of fishing spots or other locations as
loran TDs. GPS lat/lon coordinates are converted to loran
TDs—in real time as you navigate—enabling you to display
your current position as TDs.
When entering new waypoints, you can enter waypoint
coordinates as loran TDs, usually by first pressing a
LL/TDS
key, which switches the display of coordinates between lat/lon
and loran TDs.
The 961/962 may be used to simulate full operation of a loran
receiver. Position coordinates may be displayed as TDs, and all
navigation functions may be used as if you were actually
receiving loran signals. Remember, however, that these
calculated TDs won’t exactly match the positions of previously
recorded TD coordinates that you obtained from actual loran
signals. In most areas, TD errors shouldn’t exceed one
microsecond on the best pair selected. However, larger errors
are possible in areas for which the 961/962 doesn’t contain
accurate factory-programmed ASF correction points.
