you’ve installed 10 charts, you’ll have one ARCS license, one
user permit, and 10 chart permits; if you’ve installed 100
charts, you’ll have one ARCS license, one user permit, and 100
chart permits, and so on. All three of these essential
components are interrelated and know about each other. If
any of them is wrong, outdated, or damaged, the chart won’t
be viewable.
Two levels of ARCS chart licensing are available: the Navigator
series or the Skipper series. You can use either one, but not
both at the same time. You can always switch from one service
to the other, however, this involves re-purchasing the charts.
Understanding the ARCS Navigator series
The ARCS Navigator series is the purchase of a 12-month
subscription
to one or more charts. On a weekly basis, the
UKHO sends you a single Update CD with
all
of the current
corrections to
all
ARCS charts worldwide. The entire world is
covered on 11 ARCS chart CDs (each one covers a specific
region), but it takes only one Update CD to provide worldwide
chart updates!
The major benefit of using the Navigator series is that the
charts are always up-to-date. As long as you update your
charts regularly, your chart information should never be more
than a week or two old at any given time. Automatic weekly
Update CDs are cumulative, so all corrections from earlier
weeks are included on the Update CD, just in case you didn’t
install the Update CD from a previous week.
With the 12-month Navigator license, first the 961/962 warns
you one month before your license will expire. Next, the 961/
962 warns you throughout the month of expiration by
displaying an error message. Finally, you are warned for one
month after your license has expired (during this time you
can’t update your charts) by the display of an error message.
After that month ends, you won’t be able to view any ARCS
charts.
Understanding the ARCS Skipper series
The ARCS Skipper series is a one-time purchase of one or more
charts, which reflects all the chart corrections that were
