By active flying we mean the constant control and correction of the
angle of attack in turbulent air. For example, if a pilot flies from an area
of lift to an area of sink, if there is no pilot input, the angle of attack will
be reduced and the wing will pitch forward. Reduced brake pressure
will indicate the start of this pitch movement to the pilot.
The correct reaction is to increase the brake input to prevent the for-
ward pitch.
Cases of an escalation of a collapse can be prevented by active flying.
Some of the required techniques can be practised during ground hand-
ling, for example, by attempting to keep the wing flying above your
head without looking at it. This exercise is also useful for successful
forward launches.
Accelerated flight
The NOVA Combi-Riser
The SPEEDMAX 2 is fitted with our combi-risers. The wing can be
accelerated using the trimmers or the speed-system.
Open trimmers
On the SPEEDMAX 2, the highest speed with greatest stability is
achieved using the trimmers. Due to the reflex profile, the wing is ext-
remely collapse resistant. In the event that a collapse does occur, the
reaction may be dynamic.
When the trimmers are open or the speed-system is engaged, brake
pressure is increased. The stability of the wing is only minimally affec-
ted. The SPEEDMAX 2 does not have separate tip steering for this
reason.
Important: Never open
the trimmers when the
speed-system is enga-
ged! (When using the
speed-system, the trim-
mers must be closed). If
you open the trimmers,
you must NOT use the
speed-system.
