11.4 MOUNTING A STANDARD WHEEL
CHECKING TYRE AND RIM
WARNING: This checking of tyre and rim is of the utmost importance to prevent the tyre from bursting during bead seating and in-
flating operations!
Before beginning mounting operations make sure that:
- the tyre is not damage and the cord fabric is not damaged.
If you note defects do not mount the tyre.
- the rim is without dents and is not warped.
NB: particularly with alloy rims, dents can cause internal micro-cracks not visible to the naked eye.
This can compromise the rim and can also be a source of danger especially during inflation.
- the diameter of the rim and tyre are EXACTLY the same.
NB: the diameter of the rim is stamped on the rim. The diameter of the tyre is stamped on the tyre wall.
NEVER try to mount a tyre on a rim if you cannot identify the diameters of both.
MOUNTING THE FIRST BEAD
1)
Lubricate the tyre beads and the rim shoulders thoroughly with a specific tyre lubricant.
2)
If the wheel has been removed from the turntable, clamp the wheel back onto the turntable as described previously in the chapter
“CLAMPING WHEEL”.
3)
Place the tyre on the wheel, tilted downwards to allow the horizontal arm to
return to its working position.
4)
Press the pedal (
7, Fig. L
) to return the arm (
11, Fig. L
) to the working
position.
When returning the operator arm to the work position,
keep the hands away from the wheel to avoid the risk of
crushing between the head and the wheel itself.
5)
Place the head (
16, Fig. L
) against the edge of the wheel and clamp the
operator arms as described for the demounting procedure.
N.B.: when mounting the tyre on the wheel removed previously or when
working with wheels of the same size, it is not necessary to press the button
on the handle every time (9, Fig. L) to release and clamp the arms, and the
arm (11, Fig. L) may simply be translated using the relative pedal (7, Fig. L).
Keep the hands and all other parts of the body as far
away as possible from the head while the turntable is
rotating to avoid the risk of crushing.
6)
Guide the tyre with the hands so that the bead passes under the hooked
part of the head, and seat as much as possible onto the wheel by pressing in
approximately the 5 o’clock position (
see Fig. P/5
).
CAUTION: If the tyre is equipped with a pressure sensor, begin mounting
with the valve in the 7 o’clock position relative to head.
