10.2 Earthing testing
You can monitor the quality of earthing using the blue return earth connector
as follows:
1. Disconnect the energizer from mains power.
2. For the
measurement you need a properly inserted additional earthing rod (“Monitoring Stick”) at least 5 meters (15
feet) away from the earthing rods of the energizer.
3. Connect the Monitoring Stick using an insulated cable to the blue earth return connector
of the energizer. Do not
connect the Monitoring Stick to the earthing rods of the energizer!
4. Switch on the energizer.
The energizer now shows the earthing voltage on the display. This is the voltage between the actual earthing rods and the
measurement stick. This value should be as low as possible. If the measurement value is over 0,2 kV, the earthing of the
fence may not be adequate. To improve earthing please refer to Chapter 5, ”Earthing”.
A common reason for an increased earth voltage is a fence wire which is in contact with the ground either directly or for
instance via poor isolators and moist posts. This leakage presents an unnecessary load to the energizer and usually
results in low fence voltage as well as an increased earth current.
You should also test the earthing under maximal load as described below. If you are not able to get to acceptable values,
you should use the two wire system for your fence. Please refer to Chapter
5.2. “Earthing, Two Wire System” for
instructions.
Please note:
During the following test the fence is not able to give shocks to the animals, i.e. the fence will not work
normally until you remove the test load.
1. Build the earth measurement setup as described above. Switch off the energizer by unplugging it from mains power.
2. Insert an additional earthing rod under the fence about 50 meters (150 feet) away from the energizer.
3. Connect the fence wire (“Hot wire”) to this stick and switch on the energizer.
If the earth voltage measurement value is now greater than 0,3 kV, the earthing of the fence should be improved. To
improve earthing please refer to the Chapter
5, ”Earthing”.
When you are satisfied with the earthing, remove the connection between the fence wire and the earthing rod.
It is advisable to perform this test periodically and when weather conditions change, for example when the soil dries or
freezes.
