2. Overview of the BondMaster 600
This chapter provides a brief overview of the BondMaster 600 composite bond tester,
and includes the principle of operation, accessories, and all common operational
requirements.
2.1
Operating Principle and Test Techniques
The BondMaster 600 is a versatile test instrument that is capable of operating in
several different modes (using various techniques) to test many different types of
composite materials for structural integrity, providing assurance that there are no
adhesive disbonds or delaminations. Throughout the different modes of operation,
many different probe types and designs are used, depending on the test object and
geometry. Custom probes can be designed and manufactured for specific
applications. The BondMaster 600 is a very lightweight and portable instrument, and
it can operate using either an internal battery or an alternating current power source
from 90 V to 240 V, with a frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
In all of the various test modes in which the BondMaster 600 operates (using a range
of probes), the alternating electric current causes oscillations in the piezoelectric
crystals in the probes. Depending on the test mode, the crystal oscillations cause
vibrations that are used in different ways as they are transferred into the test
specimen.
In pitch-catch mode (for all test techniques), the crystal oscillations induce vibrations
in the “virtual” membrane caused by disbonding of a section of the composite
material. The disbond defect acts like a membrane that vibrates more easily than the
rest of the bonded structure. The membrane responds more easily to induced
vibrations and generates greater amplitude oscillations than the surrounding
material.
