5 Basic operation
Adjusting brightness by gain mode switching
The overall brightness of a live image during observation can be adjusted by gain mode switching.
Switch the gain mode, for example, if the image is noisy or there is a dark area and you want to
make the image lighter.
The following three gain modes are available.
The gain mode is switched with each press of the [LIVE/WiDER] button.
When the gain mode is switched, the newly set mode will appear on screen for about three
seconds.

Recording images
Still images and moving images can be recorded during observation. Data can be stored on the
provided USB flash drive.
Recording images to USB flash drive
Be sure to format the USB flash drive on the instrument before using the drive. For details about
formatting, see "USB flash drive formatting (initialization)" (P. 36).
The following table shows the size of a single image and the approximate number of images (still
images) and times (moving image) that can be recorded on a USB flash drive.
Image recording settings must be configured using menu operations. See "6 Menu operations and
functions" (P. 34) and "RECORD" (P. 35) in "6.2 Using the live screen/freeze screen".
Mode
Description
AUTO
This mode is used to automatically change the dynamic range interlocked
with the BRT setting. Note that image noise may become extreme
depending on the BRT setting.
WiDER1
This mode is used when a brighter image than is possible using the
"AUTO" mode is desired. Note that image noise may become extreme
under certain observation conditions.
WiDER2
This mode is used when a brighter image than is possible using the
"WiDER1" mode is desired.
The "WiDER2" mode further expands the dynamic range so that dark
places can be observed. Note that image noise may become extreme
under certain observation conditions.
