Performing a blood glucose test
45
When testing multiple patients, follow these guidelines for disease control:
• Never reuse lancets. Restrict use of fingerstick capillary whole blood sampling devices to individual
patients. Use only single-use lancets that permanently retract upon puncture.
1
• Dispose of used fingerstick devices and lancets at the point of use in an approved biohazard sharps
container.
1
• External surfaces of the meter should be disinfected regularly and anytime contamination with blood
or body fluids occurs or is suspected.
1
• If a meter has been used for one patient and must be reused for another patient, the device must be
disinfected in between patients or before use on another patient.
1
• Wear gloves when performing a fingerstick for glucose monitoring and during any other procedure that
involves potential exposure to blood or body fluids.
1
• Change gloves between patient contacts. Change gloves that have touched potentially blood- or body
fluid-contaminated objects or fingerstick wounds before touching clean surfaces.
