Within the GPON, various link losses are realized (however small) due to splices, connectors and/or distance. The tables
below (See ‘Table R-2: GPON Optical Budget’, ‘Table R-3: VPON Optical Budget’, and ‘Table R-4: Laser RF Input
Characteristics’) provide you with information on the various components within the system and their resultant expected
losses.

Planning for Worst Case
Minimum PON Loss
The GPON system should be designed around the VPON Path budget
since 1550 nm transmissions provide less loss as compared to 1310 and
1490nm transmissions.
Maximum PON Loss
The FiberPoint Transmit Power and the Receive window of the GPON card
are the main factors to use for system loss calculations.
Insertion Losses, 1310nm (Upstream)
6 Mile Fiber Loss @ 1310 nm
3.84 dB
1 x 32 Split (using 1:8s and 1:4s)
17.63 dB
CWDM - HeadEnd
.8dB
FiberPoint Connector
.25 dB
Splices (.03/each)
.09 dB
Mode Partition Noise
0.0 dB
3 Sigma (Manufacturers Variance)
1.00 dB
Total
23.61 dB
Optical Budget Calculation: -1 dBm (FiberPoint Output) + (-23.61) dB Path Loss = -24.61 dBm.
The Optical Receive Window (-14 to -27 dBm) is met with a margin of 2.39 dB
Insertion Losses (Downstream)
6 Mile Fiber Loss @ 1550 nm
2.40 dB
1 x 32 Split (using 1:8s and 1:4s)
17.63 dB
CWDM - HeadEnd

Dispersion Penalty
0.0 dB
3 Sigma (Manufacturers Variance)
1.00 dB
Total
22.17 dB
Optical Budget Calculation: +1 dBm (GPON Card Output) + -22.17 dB Path Loss = - 21.17 dBm.
The Optical Receive Window (-3 to -25 dBm) is met with a margin of 3.83 dB.
