Adjusting for the Distance
Between Your Eyes
The distance between the eyepiece
lenses of the binocular should be
adjusted to match the distance
between your eyes, called the “inter-
pupillary distance.” To adjust the
binocular, hold each barrel firmly;
move them together or apart while
looking through the binocular with
both eyes until you see a single,
round field. Make this adjustment
before focusing.
Focusing
Venture binoculars feature a con-
venient center focusing knob.
However, because each of your
eyes may differ slightly in their focus,
the binocular also includes a left eye
diopter adjustment. Follow this
method for focusing:
With both eyes open, rotate the left
eyepiece to the full counterclockwise
position, then sight on a distant sub-
ject. Cover the left objective (front)
lens with your hand. Turn the center
focusing knob until the image in the
right eyepiece is sharp. Now cover the
right objective lens and focus the left
side by rotating the left eyepiece (do
not adjust the center focusing knob)
until the image is sharp. The binocular
is now focused for your eyes. Make a note of the diopter setting
so you can return to it quickly in the future. With the left eyepiece
now set, focusing is achieved by rotating the center knob.
Using the Zoom Feature
Orion Ventures provide a continu-
ous range of magnification, giving
them great versatility to handle
nearly any viewing situation. The
magnification is adjusted to the
desired level by sliding the zoom
lever by the right eyepiece with your
thumb and forefinger (Figure 1.) The
magnification scale and indicator
mark printed underneath the right
eyepiece show the magnification
setting (Figure 2.) Changing the
magnification may also require a
slight refocusing of the binocular
(with the center focus wheel) to
achieve the sharpest image.
For general use, it’s a good idea to
start viewing at the lowest magnifi-
cation until you’ve acquired your
viewing target. Then you can zoom
to a higher magnification to see
more detail.
The Venture 7-15x35 (#9376) has
a continuous magnification range
between 7x and 15x and 35mm-
diameter objective lenses. The
Venture 8-20x50 (#9375) has a
continuous magnification range
between 8x and 20x and 50mm-
diameter objective lenses. Note
that as magnification increases, the
images will not be as bright as they are at lower powers.
High magnifications (above 10x power) may also require a
tripod for steady views.
