7. Remove the clutch housing from the ring gear housing and place it on a sturdy, clean work surface with the cover
(smaller) side down.
8. With a plastic mallet, drive the clutch disc retainer plate (32) down to improve access to the retaining ring (33).
Remove the retaining ring (33), retainer plate (32), ring gear (36), clutch friction and steel separator discs (30,
31).
9. Select the four best steel separator discs (31) and the three best friction discs (30) and set aside the remaining
discs.
10. Insert the ring gear (36) in to the clutch housing with the grooved end facing the piston (29). Install one new
spacer plate (39) into the housing, against the piston. Install one steel separator disc (31) into the housing,
against the new spacer plate. Install one friction disc (30) into the housing and alternately install a total of four
steel separator discs (31) and three friction discs (30) fi nishing with a steel separator disc on top. Install the re-
maining new spacer plate (39) on top of the last steel separator disc.
11. Install the retainer plate (32) into the housing making certain it is below the retaining ring groove. Install the re-
taining ring (33) into the housing. Use a punch and hammer to gently tap the retaining ring to make sure it is fully
seated in the housing groove.
12. Inspect the condition of the housing o-ring (48) and replace it if necessary.
13. Turn the housing over with the large diameter side toward the work surface. Remove the clutch piston (29) from
the housing and inspect the condition of the inner and out piston seal rings (34, 35), replacing them as required.
Lubricate the piston, piston bore and piston seals with winch oil and install the piston into the clutch housing until
it contacts the outer spacer plate (39).
14. Lubricate the ring gear housing o-ring sealing surface and the clutch housing o-ring with winch oil. Lift the clutch
housing sub-assembly into position and install it into the ring gear housing. Install the capscrews and washers
(49, 50) into the housing and evenly tighten to 75 lb.-ft. (102 Nm) then to 100 lb.-ft. (136 Nm) torque.
15. Install the planet carrier (19) into the clutch housing. The planet gears must be aligned to engage the ring gear
(36) and the sun gear shaft (44).
16. Install the 16 piston springs (51) into the piston in a 4 springs then 2 empty holes, then 4 springs alternating pat-
tern. The springs must be evenly distributed in the piston.
17. Apply general purpose grease to the two thrust washers and one thrust bearing (68, 69) and install them onto
the pilot of the hub in the center of the cover (67).
18. Inspect the condition of the cover o-ring (70) and replace as required. Apply a light coating of general purpose
grease of winch oil to the cover o-ring and sealing surface in the clutch housing. Install the cover (67) onto the
clutch housing making certain the thrust bearing group (68, 69) is properly located on the hub and the cover
dowel pins engage the groove in the ring gear. Make certain the vent plug is located at the twelve o’clock posi-
tion. Install the capscrews and washers (71, 72). Evenly tighten the capscrews in a cross pattern to compress
the piston springs. After all the springs are compressed and the cover is pulled in to the clutch housing, evenly
tighten the capscrews to 75 lb.-ft. (102 Nm) then to 100 lb.-ft. (136 Nm) torque.
19. Record the serial number of the winch, tractor, service meter units (SMU) and date winch was updated. Use a ¼
in. – 3/8 in. (6-8 mm) number stamp and imprint the number “3” into the winch frame off to the right hand side of
the serial number data plate. The 3 designates three friction discs are installed in the hook winch drop clutch.
20. Fill the hook winch gear cavity to the level plug (centerline of gear housing) with recommended lubricant. The
gear cavity holds approximately 16 quarts (15 L). Refer to the winch section of the tractor Operators and Main-
tenance Manual for the lubricant recommendation for your operating conditions and ambient temperature.
