Special Techniques
Undercranking to Increase the Gain
When lighting is insufficient, the frame rate can be
reduced to increase the gain while preserving image
quality. A slower shutter speed produces an even
more effective result.
Undercranking with No FRC
This technique uses undercranking for fast-motion
recording. This technique cannot be used with
images shot with a film camera. It is often used when
producing commercials recorded with the VariCam.
The resulting image creates a fast-motion effect. It
gives a blurry effect to a normal-speed image, to
achieve a unique ambience. This technique is not
recommended for scenes in which an object moves
across the screen, since the motion will be somewhat
jerky.
