CD-ROM Compact Disc Read Only Memory. A data storage system using CDs as
the medium. CD-ROMs hold more than 600MB of data.
Centronics interface A parallel interface with 36 pins that will transmit eight data
bits simultaneously. The interface originates from the Centronics Company, a printer
manufacturer. It has become widely used as a parallel interface standard.
Character Pitch The number of characters per inch.
Character Set The group of symbols, letters and or codes that are used to represent
a language. The character set for English has 26 characters. The ASCII character
set has 128 characters.
Charge An intrinsic property of electricity. A charge is either positive or negative.
Charges are used to create latent images in electrophotography.
Cheapernet Thin wire Ethernet.
Chooser The name of Macintoshes utility that lets the user choose which printer,
server, modem, scanner, etc., on the network he wants to use.
Circuit switching The transmission technique in which a physical circuit is established
between sender and receiver before transmission takes place. When the transmission
is complete, the circuit is freed.
Click Charge A per page maintenance fee incorporated into service contracts by
vendors of mid-range and production oriented printers or copiers. Click charges
normally are charged in addition to a flat monthly maintenance rate. Click charges
are not used by vendors of offset lithographic equipment, and only a few vendors
use them for production oriented color printers.
Client/server computing The division of an application into two parts; a front end
client and a back end server. It allows multiple front ends running on a PC or Unix
workstation (clients) to access the same SQL based server database at the same
time over the LAN. The aim is to off-load as much processing as possible to the
intelligent desktop leaving only the shared information and the software for managing
it at the central server. An application that is running in such a fashion with client and
server linked by a LAN is termed a bifurcated application.
