THE L’ASTRONOMO - LUMINOR 1950
TOURBILLON EQUATION OF TIME WATCH
Dedicated to the admirers of great technical complications and produced
according to the customer’s specific requests, the L’Astronomo - Luminor
1950 Tourbillon Equation of Time by Officine Panerai is a tribute to the genius
of Galileo Galilei.
The watch functions are immediately evident and clearly displayed on the dial:
a date window at 3 o’clock, alongside the small dial with the month indicator,
the sunrise and sunset times, the equation of time display and the small
seconds dial with tourbillon indicator at 9 o’clock.
The P.2005/G calibre features a typical Panerai tourbillon regulator, which can
be admired through the back. The special feature of the regulating device
developed by Panerai lies in the fact that the Tourbillon cage rotates on an axis
at right angles to the axis of the balance wheel
(diagram a)
and that it makes
two rotations per minute: this rotation ensures great accuracy, providing the

best compensation for the irregular rate caused by the effect of the force of
gravity. The fascinating motion of the tourbillon
(P)
can be admired both
through the back of the watch and on the small seconds dial, where the tiny
rotating disc of the tourbillon indicator
(K)
rotates twice as quickly as the
seconds hand, since it moves at the speed of the tourbillon cage.
A further hugely fascinating element enhances the sophistication and
uniqueness of the watch: the map of the sky which, day by day, reflects the
same portion of the night sky that is visible from the city chosen by the owner.
Engraved on the P.2005/G movement are the individual sequential number of
the movement and the name of the city; this name is also engraved on the
back of the case, together with the geographical coordinates of the specific
address chosen by the customer.

HE CASE
The case of the Panerai L’Astronomo - Luminor 1950 Tourbillon Equation of Time
is 50mm in diameter. In the construction of the case, Panerai has made use of
techniques involving many complex working operations, which ensure an
exceptional aesthetic finish and the best resistance in terms of shock absorption.
To optimise the reliability of the watch over a long period, the winding crown
incorporates a special element with a threaded ring. Its function is to control the
degree of force with which the winding crown is locked by the device protecting
the winding crown, which protects it from shocks and accidental damage as well
as helping to ensure the water-resistance of the case. The moving lever is
mounted on the bridge fixed to the case, which is engraved with the letters REG.
T.M. (registered trademark). The lever is terminated by a small rotating cushion-
like component, which prevents wear to the end of the lever in contact with the
crown, allowing the most effective setting of the axial pressure between the two
parts. The crystal is of synthetic sapphire, obtained from corundum, a very hard
material (second only to diamond), free of impurities, transparent, resistant to
abrasion and with anti-reflective treatment.
The screw-in back has a sapphire crystal window, enabling the mechanism
