Contamination builds up on the read/write heads of the magnetic stripe reader (MSR) due to magnetic
oxides, dust, dirt, grease, fingerprint oils, etc. that are on credit cards. The magnetic reader head scrapes
the magnetic stripe on the credit card during the reading process. These contaminants often result in
processing errors, lost data, downtime, and increased magnetic head wear.
MSR Cleaning Kit
If you are experiencing card-read failures, use an MSR cleaning kit to remove the contaminants. The kit
contains a plastic card with nap on both sides and the nap has isopropyl alcohol cleaning solution on it.
The plastic card is passed through the reader like a credit card. The MSR cleaning kit can be ordered from
PAR by ordering part number 803015001.
Cleaning the Cash Drawer
The cash drawer should be inspected, cleaned and lubricated
frequently during heavy use. Frequency is dependent on use and the
environment, but the typical recommended frequency is every three
months.
