5.5.3 External Factors
Stray current corrosion can be caused by external sources
as well as internal sources. Some major causes of external
current sources are:
1. Adjacent boats with current leaks
2. Polluted water
3. Dockside shore power connections
LI. Portable battery charges
5. Water velocity and turbulence
6. Positive grounding systems on adjacent boats
NOTE: An isolater installed in the green conductor between
the shore power connection and the 120 volt A.C. panel may
help eliminate some of the external sources of stray
current, or an isolation transformer may be installed in
all three wires between the shore power connections and
the 120 volt A.C. panel to help eliminate stray currents
for external sources.
