Measurements methods
Before using the ICC-2000, the desired measurement results must be determined so that a
measurement method can be selected. The number of choices is determined by the presence
or absence of an IAM.
4.5.1 ICC-2000 without IAM
Measuring methods:
Measuring CO
2
without headspace air correction
Using this method, the CO
2
content is measured on the basis of the gas equilibrium pressure
and liquid temperature. Calculation occurs automatically using the Hafmans CO
2
formula
(appendix I).
This Method is possible if:
The air content of the headspace is so low as not to influence the CO
2
measurement.
The headspace can be expelled by snifting (snifting is releasing gas by excess pressure without
releasing dissolved CO
2
).
4.5.2 ICC-2000 in combination with the IAM
Determining the air content of the head gas
The air content of the head gas in a filled can or bottle can be determined by combining the
ICC-2000 with the IAM. The measuring method is mainly used to check and, if necessary,
adjust the setting of the filling unit and to make a correction to the CO
2
calculation. This method
is an alternative for “Under water funnel method”.
The head gas is fed through a lye solution after the bottle or can has been pierced. The CO
2
in
the head gas is totally absorbed by the lye and the other gasses collect in the IAM’s measuring
burette. The volume of these foreign gas components can then be read on the IAM’s measuring
burette (displayed in ml).
Determining the total air content
Pierce the bottle or can before shaking it well. As a result of the shaking, the gas is released
from the liquid and is fed to the IAM. The bottle or can should be shaken until there is no
increase in the volume of air. The air volume can be read on the IAM.
It is also possible to carry out a measuring method which is a combination of the two methods
described above.
