Important information for patients and their families
This cushion is a support surface designed to help preventing pressure sores. Your mobility is reduced which
can result in pressures sores.
Definition of pressure sore:
A pressure sore is an ischemic ulceration of the skin caused by prolonged, excess
pressure of soft tissue over bony prominences of the body and a support surface. The continuous, excess pressure
can hinder blood circulation and lead to the formation of a pressure sore.
There are different stages of pressure ulcer: a persistent redness despite the relieving of pressure, a blister with
or without abrasion to the epidermis or dermis, a subcutaneous tissue injury that can become an ulceration
extending to muscles, tendons and even bones.
Role of support surfaces:
this support is designed to reduce pressure on at-risk zones by distributing body
weight uniformly over the entire contact surface. Less pressure contributes to the prevention of pressure sores.
Recommendations and precautions of use
: Please note that a support alone is insufficient in preventing pres-
sure sores; it is recommended to:
- change position at least every 2 or 3 hours
- alternate with static or dynamic standing, if possible
- maintain skin hygiene and protect the skin from maceration
- in case of incontinence, change the protective elements regularly
- observe daily the condition of the skin
- ensure that patient’s diet is sufficient and well-adapted
- drink regularly
If you are unable to fulfil one of these measures or in case of abnormal events, such as fever, pains, redness or
whitening of weight-bearing areas (head, shoulders, back, hip, shoulder blades, pelvis, heels, …), you have to
inform the nursing staff as soon as possible.
The user of such a support as well as his/her family must be trained in the use of the device. It has to be provided by
a healthcare professional at home or in a healthcare facility. A personal logbook recording recommendations and
preventive actions can be created.
It is important to avoid too much thickness between the body and the support, except for underwear and
possibly a complete adult brief. Use rather loose-fitting cotton underwear and if possible without seams in the
weight-bearing areas if possible. Do not insert folded towel or sheet or any additional cushion between the
cushion and the patient and ensure that there is no foreign bodies such as tubes, crumbs, fatty substances, …
For hygiene reasons, each pressure sore cushion should be reserved for the exclusive use of
one patient.
The cushion’s efficiency depends on a
proper positioning while sitting.
Have your seat adjusted by a professional. Relieve
the pressure points as often as possible using your arms.
Important: Sliding forward promotes shearing.
Incorrect adjustment of the wheelchair footrests
(feet too high, too low or uneven bearing pressure),
promotes pressure points.
