Chapter 4: Expanding or Modifying an Installed ITS
General ITS Expansion Guidelines
An ITS can be expanded by adding more APs and APCs to the system; this may also
require the addition of switching components.
Note
Implementing and executing any of the expansion procedures listed in this section
will cause interruptions to monitoring if the system is “live”—i.e., if the ITS is up and
running and monitoring patients. Changing APC mastership relationships or
AP/APC partnering will cause monitoring interruptions. You must notify the hospital
staff of all planned service events to the IntelliVue Telemetry System prior to
implementing these service events.
Follow these guidelines when expanding equipment on an existing, installed ITS:
• Define the expanded RF coverage area. You may need to conduct an additional
RF survey to ensure proper coverage for the additional area.
• Install additional switching infrastructure as required for new coverage area.
• Expand the Sync network as required for the expanded RF coverage.
• Upgrade the existing system APC software to B.00.xx or greater.
• Export the system configuration to a service PC.
• Before connecting a new APC directly or a new AP indirectly (via Sync Unit and
PoE Unit) to a Network Switch port, verify that the following port settings are
correct:
- Verify that the rate and duplex settings of the Network Switch port
(100Mbps/FULL Duplex) are set correctly.
- Verify that the port is not configured as a Monitor Port (otherwise, the port
will be flooded with additional traffic that will impact performance).
- Optional. Connect a PC that has a subnet-compatible IP address configured
to the port, and ping other components on the subnet.
• Install the new APCs as described on page 4-13. Ensure sure the subnet mask
is configured correctly for the new APCs before adding to the network. Also, set
the system type (1.4GHz Smart Hopping or 2.4GHz Smart Hopping) before
adding the APCs to the network.
• Configure the new groups on the APC as described on page 4-15.
• Run the Upgrade Wizard to check and propagate configurations to all APCs.
• When adding new APs to an ITS, be sure to:
- Add only one AP at a time, wait for it to boot up, and then install the next AP
only after waiting for a period of 30-to-60 seconds.
- Do not add multiple APs simultaneously on an ITS to prevent excess system
stress due to high data traffic.
- Refrain from accessing the APC web interface during for 30-to-60 second
waiting period after you have added an AP to the system.
