HOW DOES IT WORK?
Stage 1 -
Mechanical Filtration
Water is pumped into the filter creating the necessary pressure to begin the
mechanical filtration stage. There are two phases in the mechanical filtration stage,
coarse and fine filtration. Each phase uses a specially designed foam sponge to
effectively remove all sizes of unwanted debris.
Stage 2 -
Biological Filtration
The biological filtration stage begins when water reaches the bottom of the filter.
This stage uses bio-balls by providing a habitat for beneficial bacteria to grow.
These bacteria naturally convert harmful ammonia and other wastes into healthy
nitrates that fertilize aquatic plants and support a healthy pond environment.
Stage 3 -
UV Filtration
The final filtering stage uses a Ultra-Violet (UV) light located in the middle section of
your filter. Exposure to the UV light kills algae as the water passes through the filter
on its way back to your pond.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
•
Choose a suitable place to install the filter (must not be submerged in the pond).
Depending on the placement of your filter, a hole could be dug to partially bury the
filter. The filter can be buried up to the clips/clamp ring (See figure 1) while
maintaining an upright and level position.
•
Connect your pump to the filter hose connector (marked by the arrow symbol) with
flexible hose. Attach the hose to the filter connector (marked by the arrow symbol).
Use hose clamps to create a water tight seal at all of your hose connections (filter and
pump). (See figure 2)
•
The correct functioning of the UV bulb is indicated by a light visible through the top of
the outer lid. (See figure 3)
•
After submerging the pump in water, plug it in to the power supply to check both the
pump and filter performance.
•
Do not use or plug in this product if any part of it appears to be damaged or operates
abnormally (have the product examined and repaired by a qualified electrician if
necessary).
•
Make a “drip loop” on the electrical cord connecting the filter to the plug by letting a
portion of the cord hang lower than either the filter or the plug.
•
Always disconnect the plug from the electrical socket before any maintenance or
troubleshooting is performed.
•
Avoid the bulb from overheating, by switching it off when there is no water inside the
filter.
•
Avoid direct contact with the UV light as it can be harmful to your eyes and skin.
•
It is recommended that a Residual Current Device (RCD) with a rated residual
operating current, not exceeding 30mA be installed for the Filter and any other
electrical products used in or around the pond.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Filter Series PL20 & PL30
Backwashing Instructions
•
Switch off your pond pump and filter.
•
Insert a discharge hose (Preferably using the same size hose as the input hoses fitted
to the filter).
•
Push down on the grey handle (marked “CLEAN”) whilst pulling upwards on the grey
handle (marked “WORK”). It may be that the handles are tight when first used – they
will loosen in due course.
•
Switch on your pond pump. The pressure filter will be backwashed and the dirty water
will be discharged to waste.
•
When the water runs clean, turn off the pond pump and push/pull the grey handles to
their original working position.
•
Switch on your pump & filter.
Filter Media Cleaning Instructions
•
Loosen the retainer clamp, located around the lid of the filter.
•
Remove the top piece of the filter.
•
Remove and wash out the three filter foams and base unit, using your own pond
water or rain water. (Using tap water is NOT recommended as the chlorine in tap
water kills the bacteria within the filter. It will take two weeks for sufficient bacteria to
grow to support the fish in your pond).
•
Replace the filter foams, and check that the neoprene sealing ring (Vaseline if dry) is
securely located in the groove within the base unit, replace the top piece and re-fix
the retainer clamp.
•
Switch on the pump and filter.
•
Once the water is running clear turn the power off once again, and rotate the handle
once more to return to pond mode.
UVC Lamp Changing Instructions
•
Switch off your pond pump and filter.
•
Loosen the retainer clamp, located around the lid of the filter.
•
Remove the top piece of the filter.
•
Either pull off the top piece of the UVC lamp guard or loosen and remove the three
screws located on the underside of the top lid, and remove the complete UVC lamp
guard unit – both simply pull out.
•
Remove and clean the inner quartz sleeve (pull the sleeve whilst slightly rotating.)
Ensure that the rubber protective piece is still attached to the quartz sleeve.
•
Remove the UVC lamp and remove the rubber protective piece.
•
Replace the UVC bulb, and attach the rubber protective piece. (Do not touch the new
UVC lamp with your fingers as this may impair the operation of the UV unit). The UVC
lamp holder may be loose, this is OK.
•
Push the quartz sleeve and protective rubber piece back into position.
•
Relocate the UVC guard unit and re-fix the three screws – do not over tighten.
•
Check that the neoprene sealing ring is securely located in the groove within the base
unit, replace the top piece and re-fix the retaining clip. It may be necessary to push
down firmly on the top of the lid to ensure that the neoprene sealing ring is fully
located into its groove.
•
If, on start up, water appears around the rim of the pressure filter, it is probable that
the neoprene sealing ring has not been correctly located. Open the unit and re-fit.
•
Switch on the pump and pressure filter.
•
Check the viewing window to ensure that the new UVC lamp is working.
