C. Releasing guide tracks for use on stairs
1. At the rear of the chair, hold the BLUE bar located between the tracks and pull
out and downwards to release track outwards. The tracks must lock into the
fully opened position (see Fig E). An audible click will be heard. Check tracks are
securely opened.
2.
WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SLIDE CHAIR DOWN STAIRS UNLESS TRACKS
ARE FULLY AND SECURELY OPENED.
3. Once you are happy that the evacuee is safely secured in the chair and everyone is
ready, release the brakes as described in B11.
4. To tilt the chair backwards in a balanced, controlled way, hold the ‘top handle
extension bar’ at either side near the top and place your foot on the black bar
with YELLOW label between the tracks (see Fig F). Pivot chair backwards gently,
maintaining the evacuee in a balanced position. The chair can now be used as per
instructions given at the training course to descend the stairs.
NB: While descending the stairs, push vertically down on the rear handle to
promote a smooth descent.
