Fault Indication
The controller has many different detection features, described in this section. In summary it operates as
follows:

The fault Detection Elements are Phase, Earth, and Sensitive Earth Fault (SEF). Each individual
element can be programmed to log a fault detection depending on the relevant setting.

In addition to the Detection Settings there are Operator Settings. This group of settings is
Independent of the Detection Settings and it changes the main functionality of the Load Break
Switch.
The phase, earth and SEF fault detection elements are monitored with independent definite time and
fault current settings.
A pickup event is generated for each element if the current exceeds the fault current setting for that
element.
A pickup normally initiates a timer which runs for the definite time setting for that element. When this
timer expires a fault is said to have occurred and is reported in the Event Log.
The current level at which the definite time timer starts can be modified by a multiplier in the case of
Cold Load Pickup Condition and definite time timer start is restrained in the case of Inrush Condition.
When all pickups have reset, a peak current event is generated for each element that have picked up.
A peak current event is a record of the maximum current measured between fault pickup and fault reset.

Fault Indication
Distribution power system is usually Radial Network. Recloser controller or protection relay will detect
the failure of the line, and trip the circuit breaker or Recloser in a main point of power system. The
installation location of the LBS located between the protections switches. LBS is resolved, the fault
section and isolation from the fault section and the remaining sections of the power system can be
restored.Negative Phase Sequence detection is an additional over current element and allows more
reliable detection of certain types of faults.
FRTU is the LBS controller, and rapid section isolation of fault line and restoration of normal line by
distribution automation system(DAS) which has the function of fault detection and remote
communication.
The following figure shows the fault detection and
restoration of sequence. FRTU is detected the “failure”
when the line voltage is dropped below the voltage Off-Level that the measured the phase current, N-
phase current over than the pickup set and maintains longer than the corresponding detection time.
Distribution automation system (DAS) may get the fault indication from the LBS controller L1 ~ L5 and
Recloser R failure be detected to know through communication.
