AutoCal
AutoCal is an automatic calibration feature offered on Spinner

bikes. AutoCal removes strain gauge sensor errors from the power "WATTS" measurement
results.
There are two implementations of AutoCal: the original legacy release 1 "AutoCal R1" and
the new updated release 2 "AutoCal R2". Each implementation use different
LPCA

boards, LPCA SW, and calibration procedures. The new release 2 implementation is more
transparent to the exerciser (no exerciser interaction required) and provides improved more
consistent WATTS results.
The original release AutoCal R1 used the following basic calibration procedure; 1) First the
exerciser manually sets the resistance knob to zero resistance (AutoCal must have the res-
istance knob set to zero resistance prior to starting), 2) Start pedaling the bike until you
reach 55 rpm or greater and then slow and stop the pedals (after 3-5 seconds the AutoCal
starts), and 3) Wait a minimum of 10 seconds for the AutoCal to complete.
The AutoCal R1 method is prone to errors because the AutoCal setup requires exerciser
interaction. The exerciser is required to set the resistance knob to zero resistance prior to
the start of every AutoCal. However, the exerciser may not know or may forget that they are
required to do this. There are also cases when an AutoCal has started without the exer-
cisers knowledge. For example, if the exerciser momentarily stops Pedaling for more than
3-5 seconds a new AutoCal will start. In this scenario, the resistance knob is most likely not
set to zero resulting in a bad AutoCal resulting in inaccurate WATTS measurement results.
The new AutoCal R2 release has improved AutoCal by making the power measurement
auto correction process transparent to the exerciser. The exerciser is no longer required to
manually set the resistance knob to zero resistance between workouts or whenever the ped-
als have stopped for more than 3 seconds (both of these condition inititates an AutoCal).
The bike monitors the factory manual AutoCal reference torque value and makes cor-
rections as needed to maintain correct power (WATTS) measurement results. A new
manual AutoCal, which is used to replace the original factory AutoCal, is only required if
either the LPCA is replaced or the zero resistance measured torque is or exceeds 14 in-lbs.
The new AutoCal implementation uses different LPCA boards, LPCA SW, and calibration
procedure.

Lower Printed Circuit Assembly board; also refered to as the Lower PCA or simply as the
lower board. On treadmills, it is the console to base function interface and the motor con-
troller unit (MCU). On self-powered units, it is the lower PCA console to base function inter-
face.
