Create a Logical Drive
The following procedures provide the basic steps needed to create a logical drive
and get your VTrak running quickly. You may create your logical drive
automatically or manually.
You might prefer to let VTrak to create the logical drive automatically if you are
new to RAID technology or you are satisfied with VTrak’s default settings.
Create a Logical Drive
Automatically
With the disk drives installed and your VTrak configured as described earlier in
this chapter, you are ready to create your first logical drive. Before you begin, see
Choosing a RAID Level
in Chapter 7 for information to help you make the right
choice for your logical drive.

Press 3 to select
Logical Drive management
.

Press 2 to select
Logical drive auto creation
.

The available RAID mode choices are in parenthesis beside the prompt.
Type number of the RAID mode (level) you want for your logical drive and
press Enter.

The CLU displays a collection of proposed settings for your new logical
drive. Press Y to accept or N to reject them.

If you press Y, you return to the Logical Drive management menu.
Under the menu, progress reports of logical drive initialization appear.
When
Initialization finished
appears, your logical drive is
ready to partition and format using your OS.

If you press N, you return to the Logical Drive management menu and
do not create a logical drive. Refer to
Create a Logical Drive Manually
,
below.
In order to use this logical drive read and write data, you must partition and
format it using the Host/RAID PC’s operating system.
Caution
Automatic logical drive creation:
•
Uses all unassigned disk drives in the VTrak enclosure.
•
Includes full initialization (data erasure) of the logical drive.
If you are using disk drives that could have important data on
them, make a backup copy of the data before installing the drives
in the VTrak.
