Why centered AND perpendicular?
If the laser and receiver are not reasonably in-line, the beam could be
centered on one detector and off center on the other:

(Note, in the Pass measurement mode the green LED lights up for one
second after each laser pass to confirm that the measurement was
accepted. See page 4-36.)
Tip: slide the laser up and down on its posts and rotate the bracket
around the shaft to center the laser on the front of the display. Use
the two thumbscrews to center the laser on the rear display.
Receiver LEDs
The two indicator LEDs above the receiver aperture blink to indicate
one of three possible beam adjustment conditions:
