8.3 Waterproofing your GPS
All products
Collars, backpacks or pods with housings that do not have a threaded plug
Note
: If the plug protrudes from the port enough to cause a large bump when applying
the RTV and epoxy, please cut down the port plug to make it more flush as the exit of the
USB port. Please make this as flush as possible. If this area protrudes too much, it may
be more likely to hit on things in the environment and cause the waterproofing material to
come off. Please see the pictures below for an example.
1.
After all programming and testing is complete replace the rubber plug into the
USB port. Extra plugs have been provided. Apply a small amount of RTV around
the opening and over the USB plug. This will keep water out of the USB port and
GPS data logger.
2.
Once the RTV is applied, you may coat the RTV with the provided 5 minute
epoxy or plastic coating to prevent the RTV from becoming dislodged. You do
not have to wait for the RTV to dry. The product you receive with your
shipment is dependent on what the GPS unit is made out of. If you received
plastic coating, it is recommended that you allow 24 hours for the plastic to fully
dry.
