Conclusion
PiXtend V2 -L- and Raspberry Pi 3 B can also be used at elevated ambient temperatures
of up to 50 °C.
It is only to be noted, that at these temperatures the full theoretical calculation
performance is no longer available. In most cases, this is also not necessary for an
application in automation technology.
As our measurements have shown, 15 million trigonometric calculations per second are
available at 50 °C, for example. For a 10 ms PLC cycle, this corresponds to 150,000
calculations per cycle.
These calculations are possible in addition to an average CODESYS program (with visu,
trends and I/O tests). We had neither at internal or at customer projects ever the case that
such a high computing power was necessary.
The results obtained with CODESYS can also be transferred to other programs /
programming systems (C / Python / OpenPLC ...). We introduce CODESYS as this is a
typical PLC application.
If you are unsure about your specific application in your apparature or machinery, we will
be glad to advise you. On request, we provide you with a CODESYS function block, which
allows you to check and log the CPU load, temperatures, etc. in your application.
Addendum:
The measurements were repeated in May 2018 with the Raspberry Pi Model 3 B+. This
showed improved thermal properties compared to the model 3 B (without plus).
Nevertheless, we recommend that you do not exceed the environmental conditions
specified in this chapter. Thus, your PiXtend V2 -L- always remains in a reliable &
predictable operating condition.
