I
Institute of
Electrical and
Electronics
Engineers (IEEE)
A professional society serving electrical engineers through its
publications, conferences, and standards development activities.
The body responsible for the Ethernet 802.3 and wireless LAN
802.11 specifications.
Internet Assigned
Numbers Authority
(IANA)
The organization operated under the IAB. IANA delegates authority
for IP address-space allocation and domain-name assignment to the
NIC and other organizations. IANA also maintains a database of
assigned protocol identifiers used in the TCP/IP suite, including
autonomous system numbers.
Internet
Engineering Task
Force (IETF)
A worldwide organization of individuals interested in networking
and the Internet. Managed by the Internet Engineering Steering
Group (IESG), the IETF is charged with studying technical
problems facing the Internet and proposing solutions to the Internet
Architecture Board (IAB). The work of the IETF is carried out by
various working groups that concentrate on specific topics, such as
routing and security. The IETF is the publisher of the specifications
that led to the TCP/IP protocol standard.
O
Open System
Interconnection
(OSI)
OSI, defined by the International Standardization Organization
(ISO), is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the
internal functions of a communication system by partitioning it into
seven abstraction layers. The seven layers are physical layer, data
link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer, presentation
layer, and application layer. Each layer specifies particular network
functions, such as addressing, flow control, error control,
encapsulation, and reliable message transfer. The lowest layer (the
physical layer) is closest to the media technology. The lower two
layers are implemented in hardware and software whereas the upper
five layers are implemented only in software. The highest layer (the
application layer) is closest to the user. The OSI reference model is
used universally as a method for teaching and understanding
network functionality.
Optical
Distribution Frame
(ODF)
A distribution connection device between the fiber and a
communication device. It is an important part of the optical
transmission system. It is mainly used for fiber splicing, optical
connector installation, fiber adjustment, additional pigtail storage,
and fiber protection.
Optical
Distribution
Network (ODN)
It refers to the optical transmission channel between the OLT and
ONU.
OLT backbone
fiber protection
(Type B)
Perform redundancy protection on backbone fiber and OLT PON
