20.2 Direct Fired Burner Flame Provin
g
(Flame
Rod)
The flame rod in the b
u
rner is constr
u
cted of a
material that prod
u
ces a signal
w
hen heated. This
signal is meas
u
red as a direct c
u
rrent micro amp.
The path of the signal is from the flame rod to the
b
u
rner. From the b
u
rner,
w
hich is mechanically
gro
u
nded to the
u
nit casing, the signal contin
u
es to
the gro
u
nded side of the flame rectification mod
u
le in
the flame safeg
u
ard control. The signal contin
u
es o
u
t
of the mod
u
le to the flame rod
w
here it completes the
loop. The length the flame rod extends into the
b
u
rner is determined by, the ins
u
lator s
u
rro
u
nding
the rod. This ins
u
lator m
u
st not be exposed more
than 1/8" into the b
u
rner and not recessed more than
1/8". At this setting the flame rod
w
ill be en
v
eloped by
the pilot or main flame. It
w
ill be glo
w
ing bright red
along at least 50% of its length.
See Page 115,
Figure 72
.
NOTE:
For the flame rod to prod
u
ce this signal its
position in relation to the gro
u
nding rod, pilot and
main flame is critical.
The flame rectification mod
u
le of the flame safeg
u
ard
control con
v
erts this signal to a D.C.
v
oltage. This
v
oltage is the
v
al
u
e that is
u
sed to monitor the pilot
and the main flame of the b
u
rner. For the flame
safeg
u
ard control to recognize this signal the

red at the flame
relay, on the rectification mod
u
le's test jacks; S1
(colored red) and S2 (colored black). Upon recei

ing
the correct signal, the flame relay
w
ill accept this as
proof that the b

rner is f
