What can this GPS Locator and Safer
Walking App do?
This GPS locator can be worn or carried by a person with memory problems
so that they can walk independently while providing reassurance for family
members using the Safer Walking App.
Shows the current location
The device uses GPS (Global Positioning System) data to send
its location to a smartphone App every four minutes so that a
carer with a smartphone can tell where the wearer is on a map to
within about 10 metres
.
Sends an alert when the wearer goes in or out of known areas
“Zones” can be set up so that alerts can be sent to a family
member if the wearer goes into or out of a chosen area. For
example, this enables independent walking within familiar areas
(e.g. “local shops”), but allows a carer to provide support if
needed when a person leaves that area.
Enables SOS alerts
The SOS button allows the wearer to send an alert to all carers’
smartphones using a simple button press. If a carer calls the
person wearing the locator in response to the SOS alert, they
can then leave a note that other people using the App can see.
A notification is also sent, to reassure them that the SOS has
been resolved
.
Enables two-way conversation
The carer can use the Safer Walking App to phone the GPS
locator to have a conversation with the wearer, with auto-answer
so the wearer does not need to remember how to pick up the
phone call.
Warns of low battery
The GPS locator sends a “low battery” warning to carers’ via the
Safer Walking App when the locator’s battery level drops to 20%.
This helps remind carers’ that the device needs charging.
