Note:
You should not steer your vessel so that its heading points exactly along
the layline. Instead try to align your Course Over Ground (COG) with the
visual laylines, as well as using the information displayed on the Sailing
page in the
[Dashboard app]
to help you steer to your optimum wind angle.
Your vessel should then travel along the layline, under the effects of tide
and leeway.
Laylines — system requirements
To use the Laylines feature, your system must meet the following conditions:
• The
[Boating Activity]
setting must be set to
[Sailing]
during the MFD
Startup Wizard procedure. For more information on how to configure the
[Boating Activity]
settings, refer to:
• The following data must be present on the MFD network:
– Wind
– Speed Through Water (STW)
– GPS
– Heading
Layline profiles
Laylines can be enabled from the Chart app’s
[Laylines]
settings menu:
[Chart
app > Menu > Settings > Laylines]
.
With the relevant Sail performance profile selected, laylines will be displayed
automatically in the Chart app.
The following
[Sail Performance]
profiles are available:
•
[Not set]
— Laylines will not be displayed.
•
[Fixed, Angles]
— Layline options will be available and angles will be based
on Upwind and Downwind angles which you provide.
•
[Polar]
— Layline options will be available and angles will be based on the
selected vessel type.
Fixed angles laylines
The following options are available for fixed angle laylines:
•
[Sail performance]
— Use this option to switch to angles specific for your
vessel
[Polar]
or to disable laylines
[Not set]
.
•
[Upwind angle]
— Specify the fixed upwind angle for leeway calculations.
The default upwind angle is 45° You can adjust the upwind angle to a value
between 15° to 70°.
•
[Downwind angle]
— Specify the fixed Downwind angle for leeway
calculations. The default downwind angle is 140° You can adjust the
downwind angle to a value between 125° to 175°.
•
[Boat type]
— Selecting the appropriate boat type will provide more
accurate leeway calculations. Only select one of the following boat types:
– Sail cruiser (leeway 5° – 10°)
– Race sail (leeway (3° – 5°)
