The following glossary is provided to assist the reader in a more complete under-
standing of the technical terms used in this manual.

Converter
Array
Piezoelectric Ceramic elements arranged in a series/parallel
configuration.
CPU
Central Processing Unit - the processor, or micro-processor
in a computer
CTD
Salinity Temperature and Depth sensor (sometimes used in
place of SVP or SSVP).

Downlink
Serial data stream sent 'down' from the Sonar Processor to
the Sonar Head

Shipboard, or platform, Local Area Network (LAN) for the
distribution of digital data.

Hydrophone
The unit of the Sonar Head that receives the acoustic energy
reflected from the seafloor (see receiving array)
LAN
Local Area Network (see Ethernet)
Mains
The source of primary operating power for the SeaBat 8101
system (either 120 or 240 VAC)
MBES
Multibeam Echosounder
MRU
Motion
Reference
Unit

Profile
The bottom detected ranges within each swath
Projector
The unit of the Sonar Head that transmits acoustic energy
into the water (see transmit array)
