3.4.5 Operating the MM 500 control with a cryostat
Among other things, the MM 500 control offers the possibility of connecting a cryostat. By
means of the cryostat, the temperatures in the thermal plates can be controlled precisely and
repeatedly. The options in terms of temperature control are as wide as the range of cryostats.
Low-cost devices with a temperature range of +40 °C to -10 °C as well as multi-stage high-end
devices can be connected to the system. The dynamics with which the cryostat acts on the
introduced grinding energy depends to a large extent on the cooling capacity in the respective
temperature range. It must be taken into account that when using a cryostat, a sufficient control
reserve must always be kept available. In other words, the possible flow temperature must
always be lower than the temperature to be maintained at the thermal plates or the sample.
The MM 500 control was tested with devices from the company Huber GmbH, which generate a
flow temperature of 85 °C. In order to be able to use the cryostat optimally, a bypass must be
provided in the inflow. This can be purchased from the cryostat manufacturer. Cryostats with
lower flow temperatures shall be only available upon consultation with Retsch GmbH with MM
