It is CRITICAL that the valise is not thrown overboard without FIRST having been secured to a strong
point on the aircraft. If this instruction is not observed, the valise may be lost, and/or personnel may
be pulled overboard with it.
Caution: DO NOT attempt to unpack and inflate the liferaft in the cabin of the aircraft;
this may damage or puncture the liferaft. ALWAYS insure that the liferaft is
inflated in the water.
When the aircraft is to be abandoned, carry the packed valise to the aircraft doorway selected for
launching. Locate the inflation handle on the valise and secure to a strong point on the side of the
craft, e.g., a handrail. (See Figure 5)
For 2 and 4 person Aero Compact liferafts: With the inflation lanyard properly secured, throw the
packed valise into the water. Grasp the painterline and pull it continuously until inflation begins. As
inflation occurs, the force exerted by the inflating liferaft breaks open the valise. Continue pulling out
the remainder of the inflation lanyard. When inflation is complete, the liferaft is ready for boarding.
Full inflation is achieved in 30 to 60 seconds.
In the rare event that the liferaft should inflate upside down, it can be righted by a survivor in the
water. The Aero Compact 4 person rafts have a righting handle fitted to the underside of the floor for
additional assistance.
The floating knife stowed in a compartment on the buoyancy tube is used when it becomes necessary
to sever the inflation lanyard/painterline and free the liferaft from the abandoned ship.
As the buoyancy of the liferaft is greater than the strength of the painterline, there is no danger of the
liferaft be dragged down if the abandoned aircraft quickly sinks. The line will break, allowing the
liferaft to float freely on the surface.
On rafts with an optional canopy, a canopy kit bag is packed inside the raft valise and tethered to the
life raft buoyancy tube. After inflating and boarding the raft, retrieve the canopy kit bag from the
water. The kit bag contains the orange canopy fabric and yellow inflatable arch support tube. Orally
inflate the arch tube and connect to the raft. Then attach the canopy fabric and erect using the arch
tube. (See Figure 6)
