FUNCTION TESTS

GENERAL
A full function test is not required for normal service. The following items listed will need to be
assessed for proper operation and restored if they are non-functional. Refer to Chapter 7 – Repair for
repair/replacement instructions for failed components.
LIGHT
Check the unit expiration date. Replace unit if expired or will expire before next inspection date.
Check the unit for visual signs of damage and deterioration. Visually inspect the two water entry holes
of the battery. No corrosion or incrustation should be visible. Use calipers to measure the thickness of
the battery case. Measure the case thickness across the entire length of the battery. Case thickness
should not exceed 0.650in. (16.50mm) at any point. Replace as necessary.
TOPPING-OFF VALVES
Check the valve for leaks. If the valve seat is suspect, insert a finger to depress the valve check. This
will allow escaping air to dislodge any foreign matter which may be causing faulty seating. Remove
the probe and recheck for leaks. If leaks cannot be rectified, replace the valve.
PRESSURE RELIEF VALVES
1.
Fit a plug (Part No. 301-014) into the relief port of the valve
2.
Using clean, dry shop air, inflate the compartment to 2.0 psig.
3.
Connect the manometer to the chamber and remove the plug from the valve port.
4.
Spray a solution of soapy water on top of the pressure relief valve.
5.
Continue increasing pressure. Record the pressure with a manometer at the moment of new
bubble formation. This indicates that the relief valve has opened to release excess pressure.
6.
Stop inflating compartment and allow the pressure to decrease. Record the pressure with a
manometer at the moment of new bubbles stop forming. This indicates that the relief valve has
closed.
7.
The valve will “pass inspection” if it opens at 3.0 psig MAX and closes at 2.0 psig MIN.
8.
If the valve fails to operate within the limits given above, it must be replaced.
