Activity 5 - Search and Rescue
Casualty recovery
Conscious recovery
Once you have a secure hold on the casualty, help them
down the side of the lifeboat to the lowest point of the
sponson (between crew 2/3 seats and the towing bollard).
Make sure the crew are stable and secure within the
lifeboat and that the casualty has space to land aboard
the lifeboat
Get the casualty to turn around so that their back is against
the sponson. Two crew should place their arms under the
casualty’s arms, whilst maintaining good contact with
the lifeboat.
On the count of ready – steady – lift, both crew should pull
the casualty upwards onto the sponson. Hold the casualty
position on the sponson to allow for crew re-positioning
and to secure three points of contact.
Continue to pull casualty into boat making sure not to
injure them in doing so.
NOTE
When necessary, this area of the sponson may be
deflated to allow easier recovery.
Body Recovery
Manoeuvre lifeboat alongside the body. Connect all five
of the straps on one side of the ambulance pouch to the
lifeline on the side of the sponson. Do this on the windward
side of the lifeboat using the carbine hooks stored under
the crew 2 & 3 seat.
Connect the dipping stick together (used for veering)
stored on the port side, in between the deck and sponson
then slide it through the ambulance pouch handles on the
opposite side of the ambulance pouch.
Holding the dipping stick away from the lifeboat so that
the ambulance pouch is just submerged, manoeuvre the
body so they are positioned above the just submerged
ambulance pouch, floating on their back.
Once the body is floating above the ambulance pouch,
crew are to slowly lift the body after a call of ready-
steady-lift.
Secure the body alongside the external side of the lift and
make slow passage back to recovery location.
