Energy saving mode
An energy saving mode is a default setting in the instrument. The hard disk switches to
power-save mode if it is not accessed for 30 minutes. The energy-saving mode is exited
by accessing the hard disk again.
2.6 Setting Up a Network (LAN) Connection
The R&S SMU is equipped with a network interface and can be connected to an Ethernet
LAN (local area network). Provided the appropriate rights have been assigned by the
network administrator and the Window XP firewall configuration is adapted accordingly,
the interface can be used, for example:
●
To transfer data between a controller and the tester, e.g. in order to run a remote
control program. See chapter "Remote Control"
●
To access or control the measurement from a remote computer using the "Remote
Desktop" application (or a similar tool)
●
To connect external network devices (e.g. printers)
●
To transfer data from a remote computer and back, e.g. using network folders
This section describes how to configure the LAN interface. It includes the following topics:
●
chapter 2.6.1, "Connecting the Instrument to the Network"
●
chapter 2.6.2, "Assigning the IP Address"
LXI
The R&S SMU complies with LXI Class C. LXI gives you direct access to the LAN settings
described below.
Accessing Operating System
The operating system can only be accessed if an external keyboard and/or a mouse is
connected. Windows XP provides an on-screen keyboard that can be operated using a
mouse, thus enabling operation by mouse only. An external keyboard is recommened for
extensive entries.
2.6.1 Connecting the Instrument to the Network
There are two methods to establish a LAN connection to the instrument:
●
A non-dedicated network (Ethernet) connection from the instrument to an existing
network made with an ordinary RJ-45 network cable. The instrument is assigned an
IP address and can coexist with a computer and with other hosts on the same net-
work.
●
A dedicated network connection (Point-to-point connection) between the instrument
and a single computer made with a (crossover) RJ-45 network cable. The computer
must be equipped with a network adapter and is directly connected to the instrument.
