Step
Command
Purpose
1
configure terminal
Enter the global configuration mode.
2
dial-peer voice
voip
number
Enter the dial-peer configuration mode.
3
playout-delay
mode {adaptive |
fixed}
Determines the mode in which the jitter buffer will
operate for calls on this dial-peer.
-
adaptive-adjusts the size of jitter buffer depending on
the condition of the present network to manage QoS.
-
fixed-the size of jitter buffer set up at the initial
stage continues to keep on instead of not being not
variable depending on network condition.
4
playout-delay
nominal
value
a call starts to progress sets up jitter buffer size to be
first adapted. If network delay is uniform, after a call
is made, playout delay is kept on basis of this setup
value. In the mode above, in case that it is set as
fixed, jitter buffer is kept with setup value of normal.
5
playout-delay
maximum
value
In case that jitter buffer size is set up in a adaptive
mode, set up a maximum size whose jitter buffer can
be extended dynamically. this allows for the delay to
the limit established where instant delay may
increase dramatically in the network, and discards
the packets over the limit.
6
playout-delay
minimum
value
In case that jitter buffer size is set up in a adaptive
mode, set up a maximum size whose jitter buffer can
be extended dynamically. In the network, delay
become reduced gradually to keep a value set up in
a minimum.
7
Exit
Exit the dial-peer configuration mode.

Example of jitter buffer operation
−
Jitter buffer settings: minimum delay is 20 ms. maximum delay is
200 ms.
−
Network conditions: network delay changes from 200 msec to 10msec
to 500 msec.
When jitter is 200 msec, the jitter buffer will quickly adapt up to 200 ms
(maximum). If network jitter decrease to 10msec and stays there for a LONG
time, the jitter buffer will slowly adapt down to 20 msec(minimum), and stay
there until the jitter increase to 500 msec. If network jitter decrease to 10 msec
for just a little while and goes up again, the jitter buffer may just adapt down
for a little and go up again, or may not even adapt down. For 500 msec jitter,
the jitter buffer will not go over 200 msec(maximum).
