GLOSSARY
Active Course
Segment
The course line segment between the last waypoint
passed and the active waypoint in a flight plan.
Active Waypoint
The next waypoint in a flight plan.
Alert
A visual or aural stimulus presented to attract
attention and convey information regarding system
status or condition.
Aural Alert
A discrete tone or verbal statement used to
annunciate a condition, situation, or event.
Caution Alert
An alert requiring immediate crew awareness.
Subsequent corrective action will normally be
necessary.
Controlled Flight
Into Terrain
(CFIT)
An accident or incident in which an aircraft, under
the full control of the pilot, is flown into terrain,
obstacles, or water.
Course Segment
A portion of a flight plan between two waypoints.
Cross-Side Equipment
associated
with the position opposite
the installed pilot or copilot position.
Decision Height
The height, in feet, above the highest runway
threshold elevation in the touchdown zone to
which landing (using a glide slope) is permitted
providing the required visual reference is in sight,
and the aircraft is in a position to descend for a
normal landing.
Disabled
Capability
Equipment capability that is operational but
disabled (by the pilot or otherwise).
Enabled
Capability
Equipment capability that is operational and not
disabled.
Failure
The inability of the equipment or any sub-part of
that equipment to perform within specified limits.
False Alert
An inappropriate alert that occurs as a result of a
failure within the TAWS system or when the
design alerting thresholds of the TAWS system is
not exceeded.
