means, when the soft electrical impulses, that TENS-therapy sends out, reach the spinal cord,
there is no more room left for the pain information; it can no longer be processed by the brain.
Moreover TENS effects that body-own happiness hormones are spilled, the so called endorphins.
These two factors together effect that the sensation of pain often is noticeably eased or
completely eliminated.
A TENS-therapy may help you to get rid of your pain, so that you can face everyday business more
easily. Though do consult your physician and besides pain relief by TENS occupy yourself with
exploring the source.
4. What are the fundaments of treatment?
4.1. Pulse width
Pulse width tells how long the duration of one pulse is. Through variation of intensity and pulse
width it is possible to stimulate different nerve groups. So it is recommended to use different
pulse width settings according to treatment mode and treated area.
You may inform yourself about pulse width settings in chapter 5.2.2.
4.2. Frequency
The frequency of the impulse in Hertz (Hz) tells in what time interval the electrical impulses are
sent to the electrodes and thus to the skin. For the choice of frequency the mode of electrode
placement is to be considered. In case of stimulation in the pain area or very close to it a higher
frequency (80 Hz and up), where the single impulses can not be felt anymore but treatment feels
like a continuous tingling, is effective. In case of stimulation of so called trigger points (points in
the muscles, that react extremely sensible) or acupuncture points a frequency of 10 Hz or less,
where you can feel the single impulse, is recommended.
In combination of both methods higher frequency settings are recommended. Sometimes
variations of the recommended settings can be effective. You should consult your physician or try
out for the most suitable setting.
You may read about setting the impulse frequency in chapter 5.2.3.
