Running a Bowie-Dick test
The BOWIE-DICK test is used to ensure proper air removal is occurring in a pre-vacuum autoclave.
Complete air removal is important because pockets of cool air remaining in the chamber can
compromise sterilization. Using an FDA-approved Bowie-Dick test pack, the Bowie-Dick test runs a cycle
at 134°C for 3.5 minutes to evaluate the correct air removal.
To perform a Bowie-Dick test, you will need a Bowie-Dick device or test pack. While you should always
refer to the instructions provided by the test manufacturer, generally, the process is as follows:
