4. OPERATION
4.1.
Refer to figs.1and 2.
4.2.
The VS151 compressor allows easy removal of the rocker arms and hydraulic valve lifters for inspection or to enable the camshaft
to be withdrawn from the engine without disturbing the camshaft housing. Without the use of this tool, the camshaft can only be
withdrawn by removing the camshaft housing from the cylinder head. As this requires removal of the cylinder head bolts there is a
risk of breaking the head gasket seal.
4.3.
Remove the camshaft cover.
4.4.
Rotate the engine to ensure that the piston of the valve to be worked upon is not at TDC, to prevent the valve being pushed onto the
top of the piston by the compressor.
4.5.
The cam lobe should also be clear of the rocker arm to give maximum clearance for its removal.
4.6.
Ensure that the compression nut is at the top of the compressor stud.
4.7.
Position the compressor in the camshaft housing with the foot resting on the valve spring retaining washer.
4.8.
Screw the compressor pin into the threaded hole in the camshaft housing.
4.9.
Using a wrench slowly wind down the compressor nut, ensuring that the foot locates around the valve spring retainer.
4.10.
Remove rocker arm and inspect wear surfaces.
4.11.
At this stage the hydraulic valve lifter (valve play compensator) may also be removed.
Note:
If the camshaft is to be removed without removing the camshaft housing the above procedure must be carried out, to remove
all rocker arms.
4.12.
After work has been completed, replace the hydraulic valve and rocker arms.
4.13.
Slowly remove the compression nut until the valve is returned to its normal closed position.
4.14.
The tool may now be removed from the engine.
