Power
button – This is the important button; it turns the i2 on and off. To turn the
Segway on, hold this button in for a second or two. You will hear the machine power up,
you will see the Balance indicator lights flash, and information will appear on the display
screen (including a happy face icon). You can turn the i2 on from a distance, or wait to dock the
key in its base (preferable, so that you don’t misplace the key). However, make sure not to turn
on the power until you have unplugged the machine from the wall; otherwise, the alarm will go
off. If this happens, just power the machine off again by holding in this same button. The alarm
will cease, after which you can unplug the i2 and then power it back on. You can also use this
button to switch from Balance mode to Standby mode (see section on Getting On and Off).
Beginner
(or Speed) button – This allows you to shift between beginner mode
(represented by a turtle icon on the display screen) and advanced mode (no icon on
screen). In beginner mode, you can reach a maximum speed of 6 mph; in advanced
mode, the maximum is 12.5 mph (this is the same maximum speed as on the old Segway). You
will never have any reason to be in the faster mode, so you should always see the turtle icon
showing on the screen. You will only need to use this button if, for some reason, the turtle is not
displaying. In that case, just TAP the button (that is, press it in firmly but
briefly
, releasing it
immediately – if you hold the button in, the modes will not shift). The turtle icon will blink and
then remain solid, showing that beginner mode is on again. If the Segway has been powered off,
it should automatically start up in beginner mode when you turn it back on, regardless of the
speed it was set to when originally shut down.
Information
button – Pressing this button repeatedly will allow you to scroll through
different information, including speed, average speed, trip distance, time and date, and
odometer. You are welcome to use this button, but you do not ever need to.
Security
button – This activates the i2’s alarm. Again, you should not really ever need to
use this button, since you should always be with the Segway, leaving it only at the
Security desk or back upstairs on the fourth floor. However, if there is an emergency and
you MUST leave the machine unattended, undock the key from the handle (to keep with you)
and then press this button. A lock icon will appear on the display screen; this means that the
alarm is armed. If anyone now tries to move the Segway, the wheels will lock and the alarm will
sound; the alarm will stop beeping when the machine is back at rest. To turn the alarm feature
off again, press the same button – you will see the lock icon disappear from the screen.
Images on the display screen - You may see a variety of icons appear on screen. If they are not
icons mentioned above, you will likely not need to worry about them, as the i2 gives you other
cues (sounds, etc.) if there is a problem. However, if you see an unfamiliar icon appear that you
think may be serious, inform a supervisor. The only other image that you should pay attention to
is the battery gauge, which indicates the amount of power remaining by displaying different
numbers of solid bars. You should never try to ride the Segway if the gauge is empty (showing
no bars).
