BEFORE GETTING ON:

1) Get the InfoKey from the walkie cabinet (kept in cup).
2) Put on a helmet.
3) Make sure the battery indicator lights are green.  If they are red, do not try to ride the

Segway (red lights mean that there is no charge in the battery)!

4) Unplug the Segway.  (If you do not unplug the machine before turning the power on, the

alarm will go off.)

5) Adjust handlebar height using knob on frame (the handle should come to slightly above

your elbow).  Be sure to tighten the knob again fully, or the handle might slip down while
riding, posing a safety hazard.

6) Dock the key in the grooves on the handlebar (be sure to hold the clip down or the key

will be obstructed).  Remember to position the key so that the red symbol is facing up (at
the 12:00 position).  After sliding the key into the grooves, release the clip, then jiggle the
key lightly to make sure it is actually docked.

7) Turn the Segway on by pressing the Power button.

GETTING ON AND OFF

When the power is first turned on, the Segway automatically enters Standby mode – you know
this because the 5 balance indicator lights will not all be illuminated.  (The balance indicator
lights are the 5 lights in the shape of a cross at the base of the handlebar.)  You cannot ride the
Segway until you have adjusted it to be in Balance mode.

To enter Balance mode, hold the Segway (in Standby mode) so that the center balance indicator
light shows green; the Segway base should be level and the handlebar vertical.  If

any

of the

indicator lights are red, adjust the position of the machine slightly until you see green again.  The
red lights are directional – if the light in front is red, it means you have to tilt the machine back
towards you a bit; if the left light is red, you have to tilt the handle slightly to the right; etc.  If all
five lights are red, make sure that the base is level, the handlebar is vertical, and the wheels are
not moving; this should give you the green light.  Once you see only the green light, place one
foot on the Segway mat and press down (but do not step on) – the machine will beep and roll
slightly, and all 5 lights will illuminate in green.  This tells you that you are now in Balance
mode.  Do not let go of the machine once in Balance mode, because it will roll away from you as
it tries to stay balanced, eventually shutting down and falling over after several seconds.  (On the
other hand, in Standby mode it will fall over immediately – so don’t let go of it then, either,
unless it’s resting against something.)

To mount the Segway, look straight ahead (not down, or you will tend to push on the handlebars
and the machine will roll away from you), step on with one foot, and then bring the other foot
up

.

You are now set to ride.  Remember: lean the handlebars in the direction you want to move;

shift your weight backwards to come to a stop.

To get off, look straight ahead and keep your back straight (if you look down at your feet, the
machine will roll backwards); then, step off one foot at a time.  You will still be in Balance
