Hand Carrying and Handling of the Exposure Device
In order to minimize radiation exposure, it is recommended that care be taken when hand carrying the unit. A direct
reading pocket dosimeter and film badge or TLD should be worn on the side of the body closest to the exposure device.
If more than one person is present, it is good practice to alternate the hand carrying between them to minimize radiation
doses to any one individual. Likewise, no person should be permitted to sit on, or lounge against, the exposure device.
The Model 989 exposure device meets both the ANSI and ISO requirements for maximum permissible dose rates at the
device surface and 1 meter from the device surface when loaded to the maximum activity of 20 Curies (740 GBq) of Se-
75. To minimize radiation exposure during hand carrying or handling of the exposure device, the following A.L.A.R.A.
considerations must be implemented during handling and radiographic set-ups:
•
Always carry the exposure device in the reusable storage and transport case to minimize the amount of time the
hands come into direct contact with the surface of the exposure device.
•
A wheeled cart may also be used to introduce distance to control exposure to the extremities and upper leg during
carrying the device at the job site.
•
During radiographic set-ups, attach any mounting or handling accessories to the exposure device on a work surface
to minimize personnel exposure.
H.
Storage
When storing the system, the exposure device must be kept physically secure to prevent tampering or removal by
unauthorized personnel. The storage area must be secured such that no unauthorized personnel are allowed access. The
exposure device must be kept locked and placed within the lockable transport case when placed into a storage area. The
Model 989 must be stored in a clean and environmentally protected (dry) storage area that also provides considerations
to minimize the potential danger from fire or explosion.
