Press ENTER to access the variable list, enter 5.73 for B, 4.8 for C (or vice-
versa), and 47 for
θ
. Move the cursor to the A variable. Press 2ndF EXE to
solve for the area.
Method of Teaching
Use
Blackline Master 9.1
to create an overhead or handout for using the SOLVER
in applications with areas of triangles. Remind the students to store each of the
formulas under a name of their choice before deleting the current formula and
entering a new one. Next, use
Blackline Masters 9.2, 9.3,
and
9.4
to create work-
sheets for the students. Encourage different methods of solution and use of
both the Equation solver and Graphic solver. Use the topics
For Discussion
to supplement the worksheets.
Using Blackline Master 9.2
The second problem presented under the CALCULATOR OPERATIONS section,
also provides a nice exercise with the Graphic solver. Press 2ndF SOLVER ,
touch
A METHOD
, and double touch
3 Graphic
to choose the Graphic solver.
To start the problem from the beginning, set A to 0. Move the cursor to the A
variable and press 2ndF EXE to see the Graphic solver variable range screen.
Recall that the Graphic solver searches for the intersection of the left and right
hand sides of your equation from BEGIN to END.
Since area is always nonnegative, 0 could be used for BEGIN. Enter END a value
that you do not expect area to exceed, say 25. (A little bit of estimation helps
here! If your value for END is too small, increase it and try again.)
