Synchronizing SIPROTEC 5 Protection Devices with PMU
Functionalities
In PMU applications, you can compare the phasors of different locations. This requires high-precision time
synchronization using GPS.
Protection devices distributed across several plant locations are synchronized with microsecond precision
using the IRIG B protocol from a GPS clock. The PMU measured values from the SIPROTEC 5 devices can be
compared for special protection applications over great distances only in this case.
You can find examples of possible configurations in the following chapters:
•
3.2 Synchronizing up to 6 SIPROTEC 4 or SIPROTEC 5 Devices
•
3.3 Synchronizing up to 12 SIPROTEC 4 or SIPROTEC 5 Devices
•
3.4 Synchronizing more than 12 SIPROTEC 4 or SIPROTEC 5 Devices
NOTICE
Installation of the communication route between the GPS clock and the protection devices
Disregarding the notes means that the PMU measured values from the protection devices cannot be
compared for special protection applications.
²
The protection devices can be synchronized to microsecond precision only if the structure of the
communication route – the communication lines and any intermediate devices – is identical across all
plants.
²
Every path between the GPS clock and the protection device must be of the same length and have the
same number of intermediate mini star couplers.
²
Every additional distribution level, for example with additional mini star couplers, increases the
latency of the IRIG-B synchronization protocol.

NOTE
When setting the time of the protection devices, you can compensate for the latency of the associated
external time source in a range from 0.00 μs to 1.00 s using parameters.
