This section summarizes the Siemens Harmony VFD message protocol and data handling between the Host and Cell
Control Boards (CCB). The scope of this document includes a detailed description of the actual message contents and
the CCB's implementation.
11.1 Operating Modes
The Harmony CCB supports 4 message modes where one of these modes is dedicated for normal power cell
operation. The remaining three modes are dedicated for cell diagnostic and test purposes. Each of these
communication modes are fully defined in Appendix B of this document.

11.3 Fiber Optic Message Protocol
The Master Link to CCB communication link is based on a pair of “FOLA” (SGS-Thomson IMS C011 cloned in
mode “0”) transceivers that operate in a Master/Slave mode. The Modulator Card serves as the master and the CCB is
the slave device. This means that the CCB only generates a message in response to receipt of a complete message
packet from the Modulator. If no message is received, the CCB does not transmit any messages. This fact in turn
causes all cells to be shut down. Any communication failures detected by the Modulator also cause a drive fault to
occur. Note that this communication link is always active when power is applied to the Harmony VFD. The message
protocol is summarized as follows:
